The San Onofre nuclear plant with its instantly recognizable twin domes have entered retirement. The $5 billion decommissioning and demolition is considered one of the largest and most complex decommissioning projects in the country. The project is anticipated to span a decade, with completion not expected until 2025. In all, the project is expected to haul 1 billion pounds of debris to Utah and Arizona, utilizing more than 5,000 rail cars.
